The town of Jemnice is one of the oldest Jewish communities in the Czech Republic. The first written mention dates back to 1336.

Twenty-three houses have survived from the original Jewish quarter, which adjoined the square on the south side. Today it is the locality of Zámecká Street and U Templu Street. The Baroque synagogue from 1649 was destroyed by the Nazis in 1942. There is also a preserved Jewish cemetery with several tombstones from the 17th century.
